Kids & Teen Orthodontics
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. That's not because most 7-year-olds need braces. It's because a few problems are far easier to fix while the jaw is still growing.
Phase one (early) treatment
Roughly 10 to 20 percent of kids benefit from a short course of treatment between ages 7 and 10: expanders for crossbites, partial braces for severe crowding, or appliances to guide jaw growth. The rest are simply monitored until the permanent teeth are in.
Comprehensive teen treatment
Most kids who need braces or aligners start between 11 and 14, once most permanent teeth have erupted. This is the most common orthodontic patient and every practice in this directory treats them.
What the first visit looks like
Photos, a panoramic X-ray, a quick exam, and a conversation. Nearly every orthodontist offers this consultation free, and there's no obligation. Bring your questions and your insurance card.
Common questions
Do we need a referral from our dentist?
No. You can book directly with any orthodontist.
Braces or aligners for a teen?
Both work. Aligners require discipline about wear time. Ask the orthodontist what they'd recommend for your child specifically.
